Thanks everyone that wish me well!

Because of my cold I absorbed a lot of guidance to eat or should I say drink chicken soup. This is good advice and I give it out myself on occasion. Well just before sunset I hear “COCKAH-DOODLE-DO” the neighbors rooster was crowing. I seized up my 300mm lens and shot these through the door. Now that I have photographed them, I ask you, “chicken soup anyone?”.

Sick as a Dog

As I lay in bed dying from some head cold, eyes watering, trying not to sneeze on the screen. I have had to sponge it off twice now with some good snot degreasers . There is nothing good on the tube, cannot sleep, just feel, blaaaaaaaaaaa.......

Fly Fishing

This Saturday I went fly fishing with me Pop.
I caught this photo▲ Of another Fly Fisherman at the Owyhee River.
Dad fished with a regular reel and worm, he landed a 18 inch German brown trout.
I caught nothing but a cold, I'm going to be down for a day or two.
Colds suck!

Moon and Pleiades Conjunction

Sorry if I haven't been around to visit.
Just an insane schedule going on and the conjunction with the Moon and Pleiades come about Tuesday night, I had to photograph it. The moon was excessively bright, I ran through many settings to try to capture the conjunction among Pleiades and the moon.

◄This is my favorite of all the shots taken. No editing, just a intense blue hue emanating from the Moons love liaison of Pleiades. The moon was extremely bright it was hard to see the Pleiades but the lens captured it.

Pleiades are an open star cluster in the constellation of Taurus. So many meanings and translations for Pleiades, the mythology of Pleiades is numerous. Of my favorites a Native American tribe, the Kiowa, had a myth that explained the creation of the Pleiades. According to the Kiowa there were seven young maidens that went out to play and were spotted by several giant bears. The bears saw the young women and began to chase them. In an effort to escape the bears the women climbed on top of a rock and prayed to the spirit of the rock to save them. Hearing their prayers the rock began to rise from the ground towards the Heavens so that the bears couldn't reach the maidens. The seven women reached the sky and were then turned into the star constellation we know today. The bears in an effort to climb the rock left deep claw marks in the sides which had become too steep to climb. The rock later became known as Devil's Tower which is located in the state of Wyoming.

Pleiades nine brightest stars are named after the seven sisters of Greek mythology: Sterope, Merope, Electra, Maia, Taygete, Celaeno and Alcyone, along with their parents Atlas and Pleione.
The fascination of Pleiades is huge and the speculation and stories around this star cluster will continue as long as Pleiades burns in the sky.

Ruby Tuesday & Creative Photography

◄ While at the Wintertime Jubilee I attended this weekend ambling down the snow encased pavement chancing upon a man shouting about God, he was calling out with some exuberance to passers by. Growing bolder about capturing candid shots of individuals and this man required notice, I seized one or two snaps. Now I mean no disrespect to the man of God being a believer myself, the impressive fearlessness of his convection's made this a very interesting photo opportunity, and I took the snapshots fast and kept on meandering down the road. Later after reviewing my shots of the day I notice in these photographs there was a bright red fireplug in the frames with accompanying red gloves, just the thing for Ruby Tuesday.

◄ Editing the photo I selected the gloves, fireplug, the mans face and hands. I then did a selection reverse and desaturated the rest of the picture. I then executed a colourised two tone layer.

I used a new technique that I am working on I call webbing, it gives a cob web effect to attain an older look. Furthermore, I used a radial blur and then fiddled with the tones a bit.

2009 Snow Sculpture Contest

The 2009 McCall Winter Carnival
Saturday the conditions allowed me to take a beautiful excursion through the mountains to go view the ice sculpture competition this is the McCall, Idaho's 44 annul Winter festival.

This was the winner of the tournament "Camelot" it is hard to see but there is a Knight with a shield of ice combating a winged dragon swooping down a medieval castle. Through the door way is accompanying king and queen sitting on their royal seats. There is also a draw bridge over a moat of ice. I can see why it is the winner with all the hard work and creativity that went into the champion sculpture.

According to the town lore and local drunkards Sharlie the (Slimy Slim, The Twilight Dragon of Payette Lake) is a reptile like serpent that dwells in the depths of Payette Lake near Mccall. The irrefutable facts about Sharlie are even in Wikipedia found here. The first documented sighting was in 1920, 13 years before the Loch Ness Monster was brought to the worlds attention.

The running theme here seems to be "medieval times" this castle is wearing a dragon as a coat and has a sinister looking sorcerer holding a staff of Ra. When the sun hits the top of the staff just right it will show the location of the treasure room... Wait sorry I was thinking of the Raiders of the lost ark staff of Ra.

This castle had a unique forest encircling it with crazy wicked faces fashioned on the trunks. Kudos to the creators of this sculpture, how they can stack snow that high and keep it stable is beyond me, and I would have like to see how they did there prep for this piece deresistance.

Applause, applause, applause, this had to be one of my very favorites the details and features of this snow sculpture are impressive. Furthermore, the irony... irony? Irony of a boat pleasure trip in the sun and water just seem to warm the air while looking at it practically overlooking it is made of ice and snow.

Cable One got into the mix and made a life size work truck. Kick the tires and light the fires, you could damn near hop right in this rig run down the road and just blow off all your cable customer's for the day. Am I right huh, am I?

Moon Shots with Venus

Looking at the Sky on Friday

Last night I photographed Venus with the Crescent Moon I used a very long exposure and caught a corona shining from around the moon a combination of star moon and planet trails I also caught a phenomenon called Earthshine. Earthshine is reflected Earthlight visible on the Moon's night side. It is also known as the Moon's ashen glow or as the old Moon in the new Moon's arms.

While it is what some people would say about shots like this are interesting in a very deep and intellectual level. Well I hate that so... I use the editor lol! And I just played around with word fonts and layers to get my very own Star Wars effect on opening credits on my photo here. It just simply says... Long ago in a world far far away there lived a man called Roger who delivered water and water accessories he also took many many photos.

I think it is going to be a long winter.

Ski Resort

I have never skied powder before, running down shimmering white mountain slopes, wind whipping by your face as you soar, heart pounding in your ears as the adrenaline surges. Looking around the web I found some great places to go. While Idaho boast some awesome ski resorts and I am not kidding about that even though I don't ski, I notice California has a fantastic ski resorts around Lake Tahoe. Lake Tahoe Ski Resort in California, ya that's right California has some great ski resorts. I know it is not the first thing you think about when you hear the name California which is synonymous with Sun, beaches, fun, it also has a great place to go snow skiing. Homewood Ski Resort for example is a awesome looking ski resort. Looking over there home page which is a very impressive display of the resort and the mountain you can see live web cams of the resort and surrounding area and ski runs. They have ski lessons and runs for all levels of experience, from bunny to crazy insane there is a place for you. Lake Tahoe Skiing looks like a blast just image skiing from the top of the mountain with a breathtaking view of Lake Tahoe. If I ever get a chance to take a trip to California the Lake Tahoe area is definitely going to be one of the places on my list to check out!

Ice Fishing Photos & Quotes

Back from Ice Fishing this is the first time ever that Pop and I struck out ice fishing. I did catch some great candid shots of folks anticipation of hooking a big trout on the ice. A 300mm telescopic lens captured things very well through my Nikon. With the photos I added some random fishing quotes that rounded out the images below nicely.

The guy looks around and then starts to pick at the ice again. Then he hears the voice again: "THERE'S NO FISH UNDER THE ICE"

Now the guy is getting a little edgy. He looks up, "God, is that you?"

There is no answer, so he starts picking again. "THERE'S NO FISH UNDER THE ICE!!"

Then the guy yells "God! is that you?"

A Little Beaver Goes a Long Ways

I haven't see the sun in two weeks due to weather and lately I have a big case of the Blog Blaaaas. The Blog Blaaaas or by it scientifically term Blogsick-traumatism and not just blogging but with life itself. The symptoms of this plauge is extreem boredom followed by no ambition or energy, I haven't photographed a thing every thing is gray and boring, I took a ride in the country to see if there was something to get me out of this current funk. Running down by Sucker Creek... There were ripples in the water big ripples... hey its a Beaver!

Here is another shot of Deadwood, Idaho from last year. I shot by itself is just fine but knowing me the photo editor is to strong a temptation and I had to add a deer silhouette shadowing the reservoir. Hey God help me but don't it look like the shadow of a deer?

Vacations for Everyone

With all this dreary weather we have been having and crazy cold temperatures driving us further and further under the covers what we need is a vacation! I been looking at the Club Med website for Family Vacations they have some nice packages that I would like to go for adventure preferably in some nice warm environment. Like there Caribbean Vacation Packages oh so nice! They treat you like a King according to the package I could defiantly use some of that treatment, or take the Mexico Vacations I never been there but from reading about it, I would love to go there also. Could you imagine me there? I would have cameras all over me snapping shots like a Gatling gun of all the wonderful warm beaches and ocean slapping waves on the shore. Drinking boat drinks and relaxing, oh ya! Get rid of this cabin fever, I am dreaming about the cure and that is a "vacation" to anywhere warm, were the sand on the beach is really pulverized diamonds glowing in the sunlight. The packages deals look like there are some good ones, they will hook you up all around with transportation, hotel accommodation and tours the works. I am seriously considering going on one right away, good bye cabin fever!

Big O Sky

I been terribly busy this week, this crazy cold has caused a inversion in are Idaho weather warm air is overhead trapping cold air below which is wet cold and nasty. Not to mention foggy and asphalt covered with black ice making everything slicker than snot on a banana peel. Proof I can share with you, when getting out of my rig I slipped and popped my left knee it has swelled up and now feels like a damned elephant knee. All that aside for Looking at the Sky on Friday I thought I would share this photo I took by Cascade, Idaho last August, ah August!

Before After Mule Deer Buck

Wordless Wednesday with Words
"Stag of Hit Mountain"

◄Before- This is a photo that I took late last spring of a mule deer buck, his horns in there velvet. I was thrilled to get a shot of this deer crashing around the wild flowers and forest foliage not scared of me but not trusting either. As most deer seem to know when it is not hunting season and are more lenient to humans. I approached closer for a better shot the camera I was using at the time had not the focal range of the lenses that unfortunately had been left at home. The buck thought this was to close for comfort and started bounding away. I quickly focused and clumsily fumbled the trigger on the camera... the shutter clicked the buck crashed away into the undergrowth. Upon review of the LCD screen I thought the shot look good, later excitedly on upload via my memory card I was shocked to see the blurriness and white balance was off. This was extremely disappointing, for a almost a year now I have tried correcting my mistakes on this photo in editing. Painstaking efforts to adjust a group of pixel's here and there, adjusting white balance and hues. I did not give up but went in a different direction to transform the blurry image to a digital painting.

Creating a Masterpiece

◄After- When finally getting into my mind that I would never de-blur this image. I tried a variety of different programs and plug-in's but in the end it was my good Ol'GIMP photo editor with some homemade scriptfu and love thrown into the editing that the "Stag of Hit Mountain" emerged. Though my efforts are never truly satisfied I am happy with the results of these edits.

This is my favorite wildlife photo and even if it was blurry I guess it just reminds me of when I was younger the deer hunting experienced on Hit Mountain with family and friends. This buck could very will be descended from deer that I have harvested during the fall hunts. These days my outdoor sports just pertain to fishing and photography. I guess it is photos like this that give me such a challenge to make a bad photograph into something special makes it all worth while.

It's the photos that I forget to take the lens cap off on that are easy to fix!

A Soft Bed

Most my life I have slept on a uncomfortable mattress, I toss and turn but could sleep. When I was younger I could sleep on a bed of nails with broken glass and wake up ready to take on the world. Now that I am getting some age on me that story is no longer so, grumpiness has replace the normal super man fly out of bed, grab a tackle box, grab the fishing pole and down the road! That started changing a few years back, I could still fly out of bed and down the road but... where is my pants? Oh no I forgot my lunch box! and my wallet! If my head was not attached it would be still sitting on the night stand sleeping, while my body was flying down the road, all over the road. This behavior must be because my sleep is not a quality sleep. I know your thinking it could be that I drink or party but that is not the case at one time maybe, but not these days. It has to be that lumpy hard mattress of mine. I have been looking at buying a Memory foam mattress, they look very comfortable and I could imagine some sweet dreams in a mattress like that.

Stinkingwater Creek

↑Something Stinks in Oregon↑

I took a trip through Oregon on business, while travailing I saw the sign "Stinkingwater Creek," always on the lookout for an interesting or humorist photo to shoot. I pulled over and fired up my camera to shoot the sign and creek together. This part of the creek is located off Hwy. 20 in between Drewsey and Buchanan in Harney County, Oregon. Not finding much information on this creek I can only imagine the origins of its namesake are from the Bannocks or Shoshone Indian tribes and because of the high Hydrogen Sulfide levels which smells like rotten eggs are the reason for the "right to the point name". The well water in this area and surrounding areas are horrible and need high dollar water treatment equipment just to handle the bad water quality problems. You can still drink the well water, just hold your nose first!

Reflections and Shadows

I should translate what is going on with this photo because it is so busy. The original shot there is a reflection of me in the top left corner taking this photo, it is a reflection from the windshield of the work truck. I added to that just to the right is a collection of old cameras I pasted in a layer and faded. The Creative Photography on the hillside I intended to do like a Hollywood Hills sign all though without the same font. The Idaho Photo I used a path tool to curve along the roadside and also for the shadow to the right.

Skull or not to Skull

Living out here in the country your really not anybody "UNLESS" you have a dried up Ol'cattle skull nailed to a weathered fence post. I am sorry to say without this talisman of western/country culture you will not even make it on the block or dare I say receive a mailing address. Now some may think that this my be backward behavior or hillbillism, but I assure you that it is not! No truer embodiment of the West is found than that of a cattle coconut nailed to a post, barn door or the front porch!

I just checked out a cool site called LearnMyself.COM you can take a personality tests and they will break down the results for you and explain exactly what your results entail. The test are free and they will give you a code to post to your blog or website the results of your test if you so choose. They have a number of test that you can take from stress test to depression test. These test are actually fun take and share, these are my test results below. I took the quick test which is three to six minutes, you can take a more advanced test which is six to twelve minutes. They are mutable choice questions and for me were easy to answer right off the hip. I was very impressed at how easy it was to use the form and how quickly they generated my results with a corresponding report.

A little Deer Folklore

Celtic Folklore it is said that the spirit of woods take's on the form of a red deer and will predetermine which deer would be slain in the next days hunt. The spirit was that of a banshee that look after the deer at the same time choosing which deer will stay and which deer would be the sacrifice in the hunt. The Celtics held deer as supernatural animals.

Delusions of Grandeur

1. a delusion (common in paranoia) that you are much greater and more powerful and influential than you really are

2. what occurs when you have feelings for someone that are so extreme, and you describe them, but the other person doesn't feel the same way... at all.

Examples...

Brian thinks that his stock market portfolio in horse poop on a stick will rise and make him rich one day.

Dish in the Sticks

Out here in the sticks where we cant get cable and with the pending digital switch, dish or Direct TV seems to be the way to go. Analog TV is going out the window and if you don't have a real good antenna getting all the channels available to you will be a hassle.

While I am not saying that directtv is your best choice, in situations like mine with no cable hookup it is almost the only way to have the programming for shows or entertainment and sports. And I have to have my sports programming.

Having directv can be a problem with heavy snow or rain and that is when we like to watch the tube the most and I have notice that digital TV has similar problems. But most the time it works great with a crisp clear picture.

A New Year in Creative Photography

Thank You!

I just wanted to thank everybody who stuck through the year in Creative Photography through it's many changes. I know it was confusing and I apologizes for that! Trying something new here and there in the end to make Creative Photography a weekly meme was a all around more comfortable fit for all concerned. To the die hard CP'ers that stuck it through a big thank you!!

Hopes & Dreams

My hope is that in 2009 that more folks will want to participate in Creative Photography. There are so many wonderfully creative photos shot on a daily basis with great stories behind them. I hope that if you see someone work that impresses you to encourage them to join up.

A Top Award for You

Every year I like to make up a award and hand it out to people that make a difference in the blogsphere. I like to make it a award for all to enjoy and pass out if one so wants to, I just ask if your going to give it out to link back to me as the creator of the Van Gogh's Ear Award.

Inspiration of the Van Gogh's Ear Award

You may know the story of Vincent Van Gogh a well known artist in history. Although a brilliant painter in his later years went quite insane he received the nickname of fou roux ("the redheaded madman"). The most bazaar of Vincent's behavior is when he cut off the lower part of his own left ear lobe, which he wrapped in newspaper and gave to a prostitute named Rachel in the local brothel, asking her to "keep this object carefully. After this he suffered recurrent bouts of mental illness, which led to his suicide July 29, 1890 he was 37 years old. His works of art are priceless.

The point of this award

We are all artist in are own way be it art, photography, writing, philosophy, comedy, blogging and we all go a little crazy sometimes. But if you ever feel so crazy to cut off your ear and give it to a prostitute "Seek Help"!

Just like everyone else.
